Frequently Asked Questions

Does Kristen Rudger Landscape Design specialize in a particular size or style of gardens?

We specialize in full property renovations which include new hardscape and outdoor living environments. Projects involving planting only, or small scale spaces (ie. front yard only) are not a good fit for our services.

Our keen eye for design and breadth of plant knowledge allows us to implement any style of garden that you desire, however we make every effort on all projects to implement sustainable, low water plantings which are suitable to our California climate.

What is your typical design cost? How much does it cost to install your designs?

Full service designs range from $10,000-$15,000 for a small to midsize residential property covering both front and backyards. These designs typically cost in the $100,000-$250,000 range to install.

Larger properties and projects which require planning and building approval range from $18,000-$30,000 these designs typically cost in the $250,000-$750,000 range to install.

Visit our Design Process page to find out what is included for these fees.

Do you have a team of contractors who can implement your designs?

Yes. Over the years we have developed strong collaborative relationships with several highly qualified, licensed installers. Most of our clients work with the contractor whom we recommend, however this is not required.

How long does the design process take?

Most smaller projects are completed in 8-12 weeks. Larger projects will take 15-30 weeks.

Do your plans cover all the necessary documentation we will need to install our project?

Projects which include significant grading; decks; retaining walls higher than 3’; pools and  arbors will require structural drawings by a licensed Civil and/or Structural Engineer. In these cases I will connect you with the appropriate design professionals and work in collaboration with them on the plans.

Do you offer project management?

I remain closely involved and on call during construction to answer all of your and your contractor’s questions, however it is the Landscape Contractor’s responsibility to manage the project, set schedules and supervise the work. I will provide the plants for your installation and will always be on site to coordinate planting.

When can you start on our project?

Please contact us to discuss your project and find out about our current wait list. Typically we are booked 3-6 months in advance.

I am planning to remodel my house, and then renovate my landscape, when should I start the landscape design process?

The sooner the better! Most municipalities will require you to submit landscape plans which meet the CA state Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (WELO) for final sign off on your remodel. Additionally, placement of steps and landings which connect the indoors and outdoors should be planned in conjunction with the layout of your outdoor living space. The best projects are planned collaboratively between the homeowner, architect and landscape designer.
